First recorded by Smoke (1972).
Hit version by Love Unlimited (R&B #70 1973).
Written by Barry White, and first recorded by Bob Relf’s group, Smoke. (Relf was one-half of ‘Bob & Earl’ who famously recorded ‘Harlem Shuffle‘ in 1963 with an arrangement by White.) Both recording sessions for ‘Oh Love’, a year apart, were also produced by White. Released in July 1973, ‘Oh Well’ would nick the R&B chart; by the end of the year, White’s production experiment with lush ‘Soul’ orchestral arrangements would top US Top-40 chart with ‘Love’s Theme’.
