Written and originally recorded by Dave Mason (US #42 1970).
Hit album version by Delaney and Bonnie (1970).
From the wiki: “Dave Mason co-founded the rock band Traffic, but left following the recording of their debut album, Mr. Fantasy (1967), only to rejoin halfway through the sessions for their next album, Traffic (1968), after which he left again. From 1969 through 1970, Mason toured with Delaney and Bonnie and Friends along with Eric Clapton and George Harrison.
“After Traffic and Delaney & Bonnie, Mason pursued a moderately successful solo career resulting in his 1970 album Alone Together, featuring ‘Only You Know and I Know’ which reached #42 on the Billboard charts. Delaney and Bonnie also included a live recording of the song on their 1970 album On Tour with Eric Clapton. The album features Delaney and Bonnie’s best-known touring band, including Dave Mason, Eric Clapton, Jim Gordon, Carl Radle, Bobby Whitlock, Leon Russell, and George Harrison under his pseudonym ‘L’Angelo Misterioso.’ On Tour … peaked at #29 on the Billboard Album 200.
“Many of the players on the On Tour … album would later go on to work with Harrison on his post-Beatles debut album All Things Must Pass and also with Clapton on his solo debut. (Mason was slated to be the second guitarist for Derek and the Dominos. He played on their early studio sessions, including the Phil Spector production of ‘Tell the Truth‘, which was later withdrawn from sale – and is now a collectors item. Mason also played at the group’s first live gig, at the London Lyceum, but left the group soon after that.)
“Mason is a proponent of music education for children. In 2005, he signed on as an official supporter of Little Kids Rock, a non-profit organization that provides free musical instruments and lessons to children in public schools throughout the U.S. He sits on the organization’s board of directors as an honorary member. Mason also is a founding board member of Yoga Blue, a non-profit organization devoted to teaching yoga and other holistic practices to those recovering from substance abuse and other self-destructive disorders.”
